Skincare and strength training rarely appear in the same conversation, which is odd given how
reliably androgens change skin. Increased sebum, acne across the back and shoulders, and accelerated
photoageing are all common, and all treatable with products that have real dermatological evidence.
The complication is that the aisle with the best evidence has the quietest marketing.
Retinoids: the strongest evidence in dermatology
Vitamin A derivatives are the most robustly evidenced topical actives available. They normalise
follicular keratinisation, increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen synthesis and reduce sebum
output over time.
tretinoin is the prescription-strength benchmark — decades of trials for both acne and
photoageing. Products sold as tretinoin cream are the same molecule at varying concentrations, and
retin a is the original brand name. Over-the-counter retinol is the same pathway at lower potency,
requiring conversion in the skin and therefore working more slowly.
The practical issue is the adjustment period. Weeks two to six typically involve dryness, flaking
and often an initial worsening of acne as subclinical lesions surface. Most people stop precisely then,
just before the benefit arrives. Starting twice weekly and building up avoids the worst of it.
Retinoids also increase photosensitivity, so daytime sun protection stops being optional.
Azelaic acid: the underrated one
Azelaic acid is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, mildly comedolytic and inhibits tyrosinase, which
means it addresses acne, rosacea and post-inflammatory pigmentation simultaneously.
It is also unusually well tolerated — safe in pregnancy, rarely irritating, and combinable with
most other actives. azelaic acid uk products at 15–20% do the work; the lower cosmetic
concentrations are considerably weaker. For lifters dealing with both active acne and the brown marks
left behind, this is often the most useful single product on the shelf.
When topicals are not enough
Severe nodular or cystic acne does not respond adequately to topicals, and continuing to try while
scarring develops is the common mistake. Systemic retinoids are the definitive answer at that point,
and they are prescription-only with monitoring requirements for liver function and lipids.
That monitoring matters more than usual here, because anyone also using oral anabolic compounds is
already loading the same two systems.
What the hydration products actually do
Humectants have a narrower role than the marketing implies. They draw water into the stratum
corneum, improving appearance and barrier function in the short term. That is genuinely useful,
particularly alongside a retinoid, which is drying.
What they do not do is remodel the dermis. A buy hyaluronic acid purchase improves surface
hydration; it does not build collagen. Pairing a humectant with a retinoid is a sensible routine
because it offsets the retinoid's main downside.
The internal side
Skin quality is not purely topical. Crashed oestradiol impairs healing and barrier function. Rapid
weight loss affects skin appearance, which is worth knowing for anyone on
semaglutide or a similar agent. Adequate protein supports the structural proteins skin is made
from, so a protein powder habit is not irrelevant here.
Thyroid status affects skin directly too — both excess and deficiency cause recognisable changes,
so anyone using l thyroxine preparations or T3 has another reason to keep their panel current.
A routine that works
Morning: gentle cleanser, humectant, sunscreen. Evening: cleanser, retinoid (building up slowly),
moisturiser. Add azelaic acid for pigmentation or rosacea, in the morning or on retinoid rest nights.
Benzoyl peroxide as a body wash for back and shoulder acne.
Give any change twelve weeks. Skin turns over slowly and every product looks like it is not working
at week three.
The rest of the cupboard
Most other things in a lifter's routine are unrelated to skin, whichever way the marketing points —
clenbuterol for sale and buy orlistat listings for fat loss,
buy tesamorelin peptides for recovery, clomiphene citrate uk products for hormonal support,
furosemide for water. None of them improves skin, and several make it worse. The dermatology aisle
is where that problem gets solved.
